A Manifesto for Dialogue

by Stelio Farandjis, vice president of ADIC

Jews, Christians, Muslims, we who believe in God, unique creator of the universe, source of the nobility of man, all of us children of Abraham who believe in the values transmitted by the messages of God, we invite all men to engage in constructive dialogue with the goal of preserving their dignity and to affirm the founding values of humanity.

Faced with the tragedies and the conflicts that have bloodied the 20th century, and in spite of unprecedented scientific and technological explosions, we witness the powerlessness of human societies to master the evolution that should have brought happiness to us all.

At the dawn of a new century, anxiety for the future of humanity is great. Through constructive dialogue among the monotheistic religions, Jews, Christians and Muslims have the duty and responsibility to bring about the rebirth of hope. Let us offer a living example of brotherhood and a model of cooperation and solidarity.

ADIC aims to:

Create mutual knowledge among believers in order to clear away preconceptions and to establish respect.

Become better informed about the major problems that call upon our societies for solutions, such as unemployment, drugs, violence, etc.;

Develop common actions that will create social and international solidarity;

Awaken consciences and mobilize forces so that humanity may take its destiny in hand.

We invite all people, beyond cultural differences, to remember that they live on one marvelous and fragile planet that they must develop with wisdom.

Everywhere in the world, and concerning every aspect of society, the children of Abraham must unite their efforts to imagine, with wisdom and teaching, a peaceful culture that rejects the entire spectrum of ignorance, fanaticism, hate and egotism. They must initiate dialogue, tolerance and solidarity in the big cities where misery and violence often destroy the fabric of society and set communities against one another. They must take an active part in international authorities, in the universities and in all manner of media, in diffusing a new spirit founded on respectful knowledge and on the desire to construct a united and prosperous world.

Knowing one another better, acting together, planting hope in our young people — that is how we will find the peace that God put in the heart of man.
